DESCRIPTION:Universal Acceptance (UA) is the state where all domain names and all email addresses can be used in all applications. With (a) the introduction of domain names in different scripts\, (b) the introduction of new and longer top-level domains\, and © the availability of email addresses in different scripts\, not all application developers and organizations have kept their software and systems up-to-date with these changes to the domain name system. Promoting and improving Universal Acceptance is necessary to provide better access to a more diverse Internet user base\, offer more choice for registration and support competition in the industry.

DESCRIPTION:The At Large community in partnership with the Universal Acceptance Steering Group is hosting a kickoff meeting to evangelize and spread the word on Universal Acceptance. UA is important to communities around the world and this meeting will begin At Large’s efforts to encourage global adoption of UA best practices. John Laprise\, vice Chair of the ALAC will be rolling out a communications plan on UA to the regional leaders in hopes of beginning a positive feedback loop with At-large Structures (ALSs) and their members\, first to spread the word on UA and ultimately to maintain a dialog on both policy development and activation.

SUMMARY:Cross-Community Session: Universal Acceptance / IDNs
DESCRIPTION:More than half of the world’s population uses the Internet. The vast majority of new Internet users are expected to come from Asia and Africa. The next chapter in the Internet’s growth will increasingly impact the global Internet community as it evolves to include more of the world. With a forecast of exponential growth\, the number of Internet-connected devices is growing at an even greater pace. ICANN must play a role in ensuring a single\, stable\, interoperable infrastructure\, including delivering the IANA functions\, to address the needs of users and devices alike.\nPromoting and improving Universal Acceptance and the implementation of Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) are necessary to reach a more diverse Internet user base. In addition\, embracing the rapid evolution of emerging technologies\, business and security models allows ICANN to maintain agility as the Internet evolves. These strategies will ensure ICANN improves the Internet’s unique identifier systems to better serve a broader and more diverse global user base and safeguards an open Internet for all. \nThe goal of this panel discussion is to discuss how ICANN Org\, the Universal Acceptance Steering Group (UASG)\, and the ICANN community can collaboratively work exactly on the achievement of the strategic objective to evolve the unique identifier systems to continue to serve the needs of the global Internet user base.

DESCRIPTION:Challenges and possible At-Large opportunities regarding Universal Acceptance; One of the most significant barriers to the successful expansion of the DNS is the lack of universal acceptance of the new names both Latin and IDN. If the majority of websites reject new URLs and email addresses widespread adoption of these strings will forever be limited. In this session we’ll discuss the state of so-called Universal Acceptance\, what is being done and what more could be done. In particular\, will discuss if there is a role for the at-large structures (ALS) in evangelizing the concept to the major players in their region.
